MAKE YOUR MATCHA LATTE AT HOME

June 10, 2019 in NON TOXIC HOME

Ok hunny bunnies, I think I only tried the wonder that is Matcha latte for the first time last December. And now I’ll show you how to make your matcha latte at home.

I’ve heard about ’em and seen them all over of course, I just was thinking “Nah. They probably taste like crap”. I have no idea what made me change my mind. Maybe it was the excitement stepping into Tea Bar (Oh my beloved Tea Bar) that made me get one.

We have talked on my Insta stories about how much of a fan I am of oat milk. Thanks to it I was able to give up the h&h in my coffee. The first time I tried oat milk was at Tea Bar coincidentally. I was immediately obsessed, I mean, I love oats so this wasn’t exactly a surprise.

The reason why I was skeptical to try Matcha lattes because I am not much of a fan of green tea. I do drink it at room temperature but hot it is too bitter for me. I know it has amazing benefits and that is why I drink it but not because I enjoy it.

the moment of truth

So when the moment came to taste my the latte for the first time, I was surprisingly delighted! The oat milk made the Matcha flavor very subtle, and I felt like I was drinking a cloud. So creamy, so yummy, and so healthy. Long story short, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

So the holidays came and went, and there I am, standing in front of the milk section at Whole Foods. I am staring in awe at what was in front of my eyes. Oatly! was finally here! And of course I couldn’t resist and bought me a carton. And as I am going back to the register, I pass along the tea section, and there it was: Matcha…IN BULK!

It was meant to be. I had to take these babies home and start experimenting. Immediately I started scrolling on Pinterest looking for the perfect recipe. I found several, and I ended up doing my own version after all that I read.

benefits

If you are not familiar with Matcha and its benefits, here’s a few:

  • Is packed with antioxidants including the powerful EGCg
  • Boosts metabolism and burns calories
  • Detoxifies effectively and naturally
  • Calms the mind and relaxes the body
  • Is rich in fiber, chlorophyll and vitamins
  • Enhances mood and aids in concentration
  • Provides vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium
  • Prevents disease
  • Lowers cholesterol and blood sugar

Honestly, this isn’t why I love Matcha Lattes but it is a super plus that it has all these benefits. Now, some of you may know that you need that bamboo whisky thing to mix the Matcha with water evenly. But since I didn’t have that, I have found another method using what I had on hand: a french press.

So yeah, I am butchering the art of making Matcha but it works. I still feel like it is a ceremony preparing it. And although it is only 4 ingredients, the steps are important to get a good creamy latte.

My sweetener of choice is coconut sugar. Now personally, I am not to keen on super sweet anything so I only add a little bit of it. I discovered coconut sugar a long time ago and I’m never going back. It has the perfect toasty flavor, and the sweetness is not overpowering and it doesn’t taste artificial. Obviously it is not artificial, as long as you get the brown one that looks a little like grainy cinnamon.

OPTIONS:

If you are not fond of coconut sugar, you can also use honey, stevia or your sweetener of choice. As for the milk, I don’t like to use any other type of milk other than oat. I prefer Oatly! but Califia is also a good one that froths well and is just as creamy. The other brands I have found they are too sweet. You can also substitute the oat milk for other non dairy milk, but I cannot guarantee that it will froth as well.

As for the Matcha, I have seen several brands out there that sell Matcha latte ready packets, but most of them already have the sugar included. I prefer to buy my Matcha in bulk from Whole Foods bulk tea section, but you are welcome to try any others. One that I’m dying to try is the line of matcha from The Reserve
